Madeira offers an exceptional environment, with its primary laurel forest classified by Unesco in 1999. It is found only in Macaronesia, with Madeira having the largest surface area (around 10,000 ha). It’s an authentic forest-relic of what the European forest was like before the last ice ages. The tropical climate, tempered by the mildness of the sea, ensures a stable temperature all year round.<\/p>\n
The most common shrub is the laurel, but there’s also the Madeira mahogany and the lily of the valley tree. The species-rich coppice consists of ferns, sow-thistle and various shrubs. The undergrowth consists of hydrangeas, amaryllis and fuschias.<\/p>\n
Our hikes take place in a sensitive natural area, so any activity must respect the environment, particularly in terms of protection: respect for the natural heritage, respect for the cultural heritage and the local people, respect for natural resources (water, soil, habitats, fauna, flora, climate) and the fight against pollution and any impact on the environment: we don’t disturb animals that are at home, and we don’t pull up flowers because they don’t grow back! Fires are a regular occurrence, so we ask you never to light a fire, and to be very vigilant if you are a smoker. The volcanic nature of the terrain and the oceanic climate induce significant erosion, so stay on the main paths and be careful.<\/p>\n
With the development of hiking, the Madeiran authorities have become aware of the need to maintain and develop trails to prevent erosion. In 2006-2007, for example, Madeira was the site of a vast project to repair hiking trails. The trails along the crests of the S\u00e3o Louren\u00e7o headland, the Bocca do Cerro and the Caldeira Verde, for example, have already been restored and developed, helping to preserve the environment and improve safety conditions for hikers. New development sites are opening up every year, but already some have to be restored because of landslides, rock falls and fires.<\/p>\n
