An itinerary in the heart of Périgord Noir, combining nature, heritage and gastronomy in one of the most beautiful regions of the South-West.
Discover the Périgord Noir, an emblematic territory where nature, history and gastronomy meet. This itinerant tour takes you through lush green valleys, limestone cliffs and oak forests, to remarkable sites such as Sarlat, Domme, Beynac and Les Eyzies. Between medieval villages, prehistoric caves and landscapes sculpted by the Vézère and Dordogne rivers, each stage reveals a different facet of the South-West’s rich heritage. A journey between culture and nature, in the heart of an exceptional terroir.

Program
Day 1
Sarlat, Capital of Périgord Noir
Depending on your arrival time, welcome at your hotel and free time to visit Sarlat at your leisure, with its narrow streets, medieval houses, covered market renovated by architect Jean Nouvel, restaurants and more.

Day 2
Sarlat – Domme
You leave the capital of the Périgord Noir along the “voie verte”, heading south towards Lake Groléjac. Discover the marsh via an educational trail, and enjoy a swim. In the afternoon, arrival at Domme, one of the region’s most beautiful bastides, perched on a rocky promontory 150 m above the Dordogne. We recommend a visit to the ramparts!

Day 3
Domme – La Roque Gageac – Beynac
Leaving Domme, you head for the Dordogne, which you cross before reaching La Roque-Gageac, a superb troglodyte town. Take the time to discover this exceptional village, its 14th-century church, its bell-wall and the prehistoric site of the fort. This slightly shorter day gives you plenty of time to stroll around. At the end of the day, you’ll arrive in Beynac, where you’ll have time to explore the château, narrow streets and houses with lauze roofs, or take a trip on the Dordogne River in a gabarre.

Day 4
Beynac – Saint-Cyprien
From Beynac begins one of the biggest days of the week, along an itinerary with many panoramic views over the Dordogne valley and the châteaux. During the day, discover exceptional little villages such as Saint-Vincent-de-Cosse and its ancient castles (not open to the public) or Berbiguières and its church of Saint-Denys. At the end of the stage, we arrive in Saint-Cyprien, a medieval village of character, created by a small religious community in the 6th century.

Day 5
Le Buisson Cadouin – Le Bugue or Limeuil
Penultimate day in the heart of Périgord Noir, between Saint-Cyprien and Le Bugue. In the morning, you take the train to Le Buisson-Cadouin, from where you begin your hike. A day of transition between the Dordogne and Vézère valleys. The day includes a visit to the village of Limeuil, at the confluence of the Vézère and Dordogne rivers. Take the time to wander through the narrow streets and enjoy the riverbanks, before continuing north to Le Bugue, a small 19th-century town.
Distance covered: 17 km – Activity time: 5 to 6 h – Total ascent: 330 m – Total descent: 340 m

Alternative : Depending on availability with our accommodation partners, you may be accommodated in Limeuil. In this case, the day’s stage will be shortened (the following day’s stage will be from Limeuil to Les Eyzies, via Le Bugue, and will therefore be longer).
Distance: 9 km – Ascent: 180 – Descent: 130 – Duration: 3 h approx.
Day 6
Le Bugue – Les Eyzies
The last stage of this beautiful itinerary between medieval villages, famous towns and historic sites. You’ll explore the Périgord countryside and discover small prehistoric villages such as Saint-Cirq and its Grotte du Sorcier. End of the tour at Les Eyzies, the world capital of prehistory. The village offers an unimaginable succession of caves and prehistoric sites, set against an impressive backdrop of cliffs.

Variant : If you’re staying in Limeuil the day before, you’ll first reach the small town of Le Bugue before passing through the last of the small prehistoric villages, such as Saint-Cirq and its Grotte du Sorcier. End of the course at Les Eyzies.
Distance: 21 km – Ascent: 450 – Descent: 510 – Duration: 6 to 7 h approx.
Day 7
Before you return, and if you haven’t been able to do so the day before, we invite you to discover the capital of prehistory, with its national museum and Cro-Magnon shelter. Our services end after breakfast.
The program has been drawn up according to the latest information available at the time of writing; imponderables are always possible and situations beyond our control may alter the course of the program.

Stay extension : Possibility of additional night(s) before or after your hike in Sarlat. Also possible in Montignac, at the end of your stay, to extend your discovery of the region and the emblematic sites of the Lascaux caves, please contact us.
Level: Moderate: 3 to 5 hours’ walking per day, 250 to 500 m difference in altitude, no particular technical difficulties. But some stages are very hilly. The itineraries take place on good trails and hiking paths, but also on stretches of small, paved country roads. Please note that walking times do not include visiting times.
Signposting: Some of the proposed circuits use Grande Randonnée (GR) trails with red and white signposts, and Petite Randonnée (PR) trails with blue, yellow or green signposts. Some sections of the route are not signposted. It is therefore essential to know how to use a map and compass. For this tour, we provide free GPS tracks (gpx format compatible with all brands) which have been measured in the field.
Accommodation: Half-board accommodation for 6 nights in 3-star hotels, 3-star hotels and B&Bs. Meals: Dinners and breakfasts are taken in the restaurants of our host hotels or in partner restaurants. Picnics at your own expense, shops on most stages. If booked in advance, some hotels can provide packed lunches (not included, payable locally).
Access: If you’re traveling by car, parking in Sarlat is regulated. All parking spaces are subject to a charge, and the hotels we work with don’t necessarily have allocated spaces or garages. Plan on a budget of 50 to 70 euros to park your car for the week. Sarlat parking map: https://www.sarlat.fr/stationnement/ . There are a few free parking spaces; to find out where they are, visit the Sarlat website: https: //www.sarlat.fr/stationnement/. On the way back, from Les Eyzies, numerous trains to Sarlat via Le Buisson de Cadouin. For those wishing to return to Sarlat from Les Eyzies, there are regular TER trains between the two stations. Several trains a day (4 to 5), 1 h to 2 h 30 travel time depending on connections. Tickets cost around 12 euros.

Climate: We’re in the southwest, with a mild climate that can be quite hot and dry in summer. The ideal times to discover this region are spring, the summer off-season and early autumn.
