Venntrilogie – Discovering the Eastern Townships

The Venntrilogie is much more than a hike: it’s an exceptional adventure that invites you to explore the treasures of the Eastern Townships, a unique region at the crossroads of three cultures. This captivating itinerary is designed to reveal, step by step, the natural and cultural wealth of the Fagnes du Nord, the Hautes Fagnes and the Fagnes du Sud, each bringing its own identity and charm to this unique route.

The entire route has been awarded the “Leading Quality Trail” label, a European distinction guaranteeing a high-quality hiking experience. The trails, perfectly signposted in both directions, offer great freedom of exploration and allow you to make the most of each stage.

Through this unique journey, the Venntrilogie embodies the very best of the Eastern Townships: a territory at the crossroads of cultures, sublimated by spectacular nature and a deeply-rooted history.

Program

Day 1

Eynatten
We welcome you in Eynatten in the afternoon and hand over your complete file. Possibility of visiting the village. Evening meal not included.

Day 2

Trois Frontières – Eynatten (23.5 km; +172 m)
After a short drive to the starting point, you start your hike in a southerly direction. This first stage takes you through the verdant hills of the Northern Townships, where graceful forests, picturesque hedgerows, orchards and peaceful meadows mingle.
You’ll cross numerous stiles, typical passages linking meadows and revealing secret paths. The varied, bucolic route ends in the charming village of Eynatten, the perfect setting to round off a fine day’s walking.

Day 3

Eynatten – Eupen (18.9 km; + 164 m)
This second stage marks the transition from the peaceful northern landscape to the more wooded Hautes Fagnes. For almost 19 kilometers, you’ll pass through a mosaic of picturesque villages, open fields and hedged farmland, before entering the majestic Forêt des Ducs, a haven of calm and freshness.
Your day ends in the town of Eupen, capital of the East Cantons, where culture and history mingle with the authenticity of this unique region. A balanced and inspiring stage, perfect for continuing your immersion.

Day 4

Eupen – Botrange (24.8 km; +523 m)
Get ready for the longest and most demanding stage of your adventure: a gradual ascent to Belgium’s highest point, Botrange. This varied itinerary highlights the diversity of the Fagnes landscape, from the enchanting scenes of the Helle valley to the vast, wild expanses of the Fagne Wallonne.
At 24.8 kilometers, this stage is a challenge for hikers, punctuated by technical sections on trails with roots and rocks, requiring good stamina and heightened concentration.

Important: dogs are not allowed, even on a leash, on the section between Pont Marie-Anne Libert and Trois-Bornes. An alternative signposted route takes you around this protected nature reserve.

Day 5

Botrange – Malmedy (19.9 km; +337 m)
This stage takes you on a memorable descent from Belgium’s highest point at Botrange to the charming town of Malmedy. . Follow the thread fagnards streams, through forests, rocks and landscapes shaped by time, where shepherds and inhabitants of yesteryear found their bearings.
Along the way, you’ll discover some of the region’s must-sees, such as the spectacular Cascade du Bayehon, which gushes out in the heart of a wilderness, or the striking Canyon du Trôs-Marèt.

Day 6

Malmedy – Butgenbach (23 km ;+ 347 m)
For this fifth and final stage, your hike begins with an ascent on the outskirts of Malmedy, offering magnificent views over the Warche valley. Let yourself be seduced by its romantic landscapes and rocky surroundings, before passing by the emblematic Reinhardstein Castle, a true historical gem nestled in the heart of nature.
The second part of the day takes you to a bucolic setting between Robertville and Butgenbach. Skirting Lake Robertville and then following the Warche, you’ll discover all the diversity and serenity of this river’s landscapes, sometimes calm and peaceful, sometimes wild.
A gentle, soothing final stage, ideal for concluding your adventure on a note of beauty and fulfillment.

Practical information

Pick-up: day 1, late afternoon in the village of Eynatten (pick-up point confirmed on booking). The hiking file is handed over at check-in at the first accommodation.

Dismissal: On the last day, at the end of the stage, we arrange a cab transfer to the starting point (where your car is) or the nearest station. Possibility of an extra night and departure in the morning after breakfast.

Supervision: unaccompanied hiking.

Itinerary: As the hike is signposted in both directions, it is also possible to plan the hike from south to north, starting at Butgenbach and ending at the 3-border marker. If you wish to travel in this direction, please let us know when booking.

Luggage: Your luggage will be transported between each stage of the tour by Europ’Aventure in the late morning or afternoon. We ask you to drop them off in the lobby of each accommodation the morning before you set off on your hike, and to bring only one piece of luggage weighing no more than 15 kg, beyond which the driver may refuse to carry it. Please bring a small backpack to carry your personal belongings for the day.

Access: By car, park in the public parking lot in Trois-Frontières on the first day of the hike. Parking costs €2.50 for the duration of your stay

Dogs: Dogs are allowed on this trip, but please let us know at the time of booking, as not all accommodations accept dogs. A dog supplement is payable directly to the accommodation. On stage 3, dogs are not allowed in the nature reserve, so an alternative route is provided.

Dates

The Venntrilogy holiday can be organized at your convenience, and departures are possible all year round. The hunting season can also have an impact on your stay, but we will always give you advance warning and adapt your stay to avoid any inconvenience.
