Family outings in the Semois Valley

Come and discover the Europ’Aventure family “roaming holiday” in the heart of the Gaume region. You’ll hike through the Semois Valley National Park in a relaxed atmosphere, following a signposted trail (mainly GR16 and GR129). The trip is made up of 3 short stages, perfectly suited to families with children, novices and anyone wanting shorter stages.

This new itinerary, designed by Europ’Aventure’s teams, gives pride of place to the playful discovery of nature. Children will certainly appreciate the various opportunities for swimming in the Semois, as well as the magnificent views over the valley. After your stay, you can also go kayaking from Chiny or visit the splendid Abbey of Orval.

You benefit from all the Europ’Aventure advantages: marked trails, quality accommodation, luggage transport and comprehensive information on the region and its possibilities. Everything is planned so that you can make the most of the region and its beauties.

Self-guided hikes – 3 to 4 days – Departures all year round, according to your availability.

Program

Day 1

Lacuisine
We welcome you at Lacuisine in the afternoon and hand over your complete file. We recommend you come by train, as the accommodation is located 1 km from the station. In the afternoon, you can visit the village of Florenville, swim in the Semois or take a kayak trip from the nearby village of Chiny.

Day 2

Lacuisine – Sainte-Cécile (17.3 km; + 174 m)
For this first stage, you start off on foot from your accommodation in the village of Lacuisine. You soon join the marked GR16 path and follow it towards the village of Martué, where you pass over the Semois river. You continue to hike through the valley on small roads and paths following the meandering river. In the middle of the day, you arrive in Chassepierre, one of the “Most Beautiful Villages in Wallonia”. The charm of this village lies in its picturesque setting and old rural houses. You will then reach the small village of Sainte-Cécile, where you will spend the night. The stage can be shortened to 12.9 km.

Day 3

Sainte-Cécile – Herbeumont (13.9 km; + 168 m)
For this second stage, you set off on foot from the accommodation and leave the village, again following the signs for the GR16 de la Semois. You start by skirting the river, but soon leave it (km 4) to climb to higher ground among the trees. Your efforts are rewarded with magnificent views over the Semois valley. You then return to the water’s edge to reach the village of Herbeumont, crossing the river on the magnificent Conques viaduct. You can visit the village of Herbeumont and its medieval castle before returning to your accommodation for the night.

Day 4

Herbeumont – Lacuisine (13.9 km; + 227 m)
On this last day, you return to Lacuisine along one of Belgium’s best-known itineraries, the GR129. You’ll have a splendid view of the Semois as soon as you leave the village of Herbeumont, and after 2 kilometers you’ll reach the “children’s beach” where you can enjoy a swim. You then leave the river to enter the dense forest of the Epioux massif, where you can picnic by the Lac des Epioux. In the afternoon, you reach one of the region’s most beautiful panoramas at the Roche Pinco viewpoint, from where you can see the village of Chiny. You finish your stage by returning to Lacuisine.
