The Gulf of Morbihan
With its many islands and islets, its microclimate that warms the sea and its gentle way of life, the Golfe du Morbihan is one of Brittany’s most beautiful landscapes.
The Golfe du Morbihan is a unique landscape where ocean, land and sky mingle in an undulating and unusual pattern, dotted with a host of islands sheltered from the Atlantic swell. The scenery of islands moving with the currents, secluded beaches, magnificent mansions surrounded by centuries-old cypress trees – it’s all a spectacle. That’s why we’ve come up with a formula where the waterbus takes you to an island or peninsula every day. And here, on a walking tour, you’ll get to the very heart of the natural sites and the lives of their inhabitants.
You’ll love the night on the island of Arz, the mild climate of this veritable inland sea and this paradise for birds.
This itinerary is suitable for walkers who love wide open spaces and sea views: marked path, quality accommodation, luggage transport and information about the region. Everything is planned so that you can make the most of the region and its beauties.
Self-guided hiking tour – 6 days – Departure from April to September according to your availability.
Program
Day 1
The Séné peninsula
Arrive in the morning at your hotel in Vannes, the starting point for a hike between land and sea for a first exploration of the Golfe du Morbihan. You’ll pass through Séné, a charming commune nestling at the end of the gulf, before discovering the Moustérian peninsula. At the end of the day, a boat-bus takes you back to the port of Vannes, before you enjoy a stroll through old Vannes, with its cobbled streets and half-timbered houses, before returning to the hotel.
14 km – descent 35 m – ascent 35 m
Day 2
Petit Mont
Crossing to the famous Crouesty marina at Port-Navalo, at the mouth of the Gulf of Morbihan. Enter the Rhuys peninsula, in the southern part of the gulf, and discover the wooded point of Petit Mont, with its 5,000-year-old megalithic complex. The route then skirts the Fogeo beach, sheltered from the wind and ideal for a swim. On a clear day, you’ll be able to see the Quiberon peninsula and the island of Houat, adding spectacular panoramas to this Breton coastal hike.
9 km – downhill 80 m – uphill 80 m
Day 3
The points of Bilgroix, Kerners and Pembert
Today’s hike takes you along the Gulf of Morbihan, where the classified points of Bilgroix, Pembert and Kerners follow one another. The trail offers panoramic views of the Gulf’s islands and islets, including Île-aux-Moines, which you’ll discover in detail the next day. An ideal way to enjoy the seascapes and unspoilt nature of this Breton region.
16 km – downhill 100 m – uphill 100 m
Day 4
Île aux Moines
You’ll embark on a short crossing to the largest island in the Gulf of Morbihan, 7 km long and 3.5 km wide. Known in Breton as Izenah and nicknamed the Pearl of the Gulf, the island’s low stone houses nestle among hydrangeas, mimosas and camellias. You’ll discover the points of Brouel and Trec’h, as well as the pretty, lively village. The coastal path, lined with centuries-old oak trees, allows you to explore the island’s megalithic remains, such as the Cromlec’h at Kergonan and the dômen at Penhap, while enjoying magnificent beaches and panoramic views over the gulf.
18 km – slight gradients (circuits from 2 to 18 km possible)
Day 5
Arz Island
Short crossing to Île d’Arz, your holiday resort for the night. Known as An Arz in Breton and nicknamed l’Île aux Capitaines, it is 4 km long and 3 km wide. The island’s charm lies in its picturesque lanes and surprising discoveries, such as the Pointe de Béluré, the Berno tide mill, the Pointe de Nioul dolmen, and the oyster beds typical of the Gulf of Morbihan.
17 km – slight gradients (circuits from 4 to 17 km possible)
Day 6
Valves
Crossing to Vannes. Self-guided tour of this Town of Art and History. Its historic quarters, encircled by fortified ramparts, are well worth a visit. Its lively port is ideally located just a few steps from the old town.
