La Transgaumaise

6 days of walking in a loop through the Gaume, a magnificent and completely different region of the Ardennes. For lovers of long walks and beautiful scenery.

This splendid 140 km loop hike (6 days of walking) will make you discover the Gaume, the “Little Belgian Provence” and will also take you to Avioth in France. You cross on foot and in freedom the Gaumatic Lorraine as well as the Belgian Lorraine, its splendid landscapes and its most beautiful villages such as Torgny.

Visit the Gaume through its country and forest paths and soak up the warmth of the region with a looped hike starting and ending in Rabais (Virton). These 6 days of walking will give you the opportunity to hear the cicadas, see the sun set over the vineyards and admire the rounded tiles of the roofs of the typical villages of southern Belgium. Along the way, discover also the citadel of Montmédy, the church of Avioth, the abbey of Orval or the Renaissance houses of the village of Marville.

The Transgaumaise is a magnificent circuit for lovers of a change of scenery: marked trail (yellow/white), quality accommodation, luggage transport, guidance application and information on the region. Everything is planned so that you can make the most of the region and its beauties.

Day 2

Discount – Torgny (27 km; + 510 m)
To cover this 27 km stage, we recommend that you leave early. From the accommodation, you have to take your car and go to the parking lot at Rabais. The itinerary takes you through the most beautiful landscapes of the Gaume through the historic villages of Ethe, Gomery, Saint-Remy, Grandcourt. At the end of the day, a steep climb awaits you to reach Torgny, known as one of the most beautiful villages in Wallonia. !! No evening meal included – possibility to eat at 50 meters from the lodging !!

Day 3

Torgny – Montmédy (25 km; + 265 m)
This step is almost as long as the previous one, but it is less demanding. The hike takes place almost entirely on French territory. After crossing the cuesta de la Chiers, we follow the Othain stream to Marville where beautiful Renaissance buildings have been preserved. After a visit to the Marville cemetery, just outside the village, we continue our hike via Flassigny, through the fields via Villécloye and Iré-les-Prés to the town of Montmédy dominated by a castle. !! No lodging in Montmédy – Transfer to Torgny – No evening meal included – possibility to eat at 50 meters from the lodging !

Day 4

Montmédy – Villers-devant-Orval (21 km; + 480 m)
This step is much easier than the previous two. Except at the Montmédy exit, the slopes are gentle and pleasant. During this 5-hour hike, you will pass through fields and forests and you can discover historical buildings, including the most beautiful building along the way: the church of Avioth.

Day 5

Villers-devant-Orval – Sainte-Cécile (20 km; + 360 m)
This may be the shortest step, but it is not necessarily the easiest. The Gaume plateau is crossed by small rivers. You’ll need to prepare for two steep climbs and a gradual ascent. On this hike, with the exception of Orval Abbey, there are fewer historical sites, which doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to appreciate the beauty of the fields and woods all the more …

Day 6

Sainte-Cécile – Izel (21 km; + 190 m)
This day allows you to cross part of the Ardennes, where you can discover the magnificent Semois valley with its rocky escarpment. You will also pass through the charming village of Martué before reaching Izel. Transfer at the end of the day to Martué for the night.

Day 7

Izel – Discount (25 km; + 310 m)
This rather long stage is not difficult at all. The hike first follows the dirt track of the old railway line along the Semois to Jamoigne, then crosses meadows and fields along the old Roman road Reims-Trier and finally goes through the largest forest on the six-day hike. This dream walk through the forest is only interrupted by a short visit to Meix-devant-Virton before returning to your car. Bravo you have done 140 km in 6 stages. You can choose to leave at the end of the day or relax for an extra night in Gaume before getting back on the road!
